Blueberries: The Perfect Fruit

Blueberries are perennial flowering plants with blue or purple berries. Botanically, they are within the genus Vaccinium. Vaccinium also includes cranberries, bilberries, huckleberries and Madeira blueberries. Commercial blueberries—both wild (lowbush) and cultivated (highbush)—are all native to North America. Elizabeth Coleman White, from our own Whitesbog, was a key figure in hybridizing the native wild blueberry for commercial agriculture.
