Jersey Jerry Broomsquire

Jersey Jerry Broomsquire (Sam Moyer, PhD) makes handmade brooms using “broomcorn” (a type of sorghum) that is grown on a preserved farm in Burlington County (the former “Jersey Jerry Orchards”). He makes the broom handles from the first cutting of a sawmill log “slab wood”.

Dr. Moyer got into broom making because of his interest in genetics. He wanted to learn more about the genetics and the color of the plant used to produce brooms. He collaborated with Dr. Henry Hadley of the University of Illinois/Urbana, to create a multi-colored type of broomcorn. Many customers will be happy to know that Dr. Sam Moyer will be attending the market more often this season than last.
