Mill Creek Apiary
Founded in 1998 in Medford, NJ
Mill Creek Apiary is a local beekeeping business, whose mission is to educate the community on the value of honeybees and provide the best quality honey and honeybee products to the local community. We are fortunate enough to have them join us each week at the Burlington County Farmers Market!
Mill Creek Apiary has a storefront in Medford, NJ, as well as about 15 apiaries at various local farms and private lands, where about 20-30 colonies reside in each location. Here is where Jason, owner of Mill Creek Apiary, builds and maintains the hives, pollinates crops, extracts and sells local raw honey, makes and sells beauty & household products, and educates the community about the value of honeybees.
Fun Fact: One of their apiaries is located at the Burlington County Agricultural Center!
Mill Creek Apiary also provides pollination services to local blueberry and cranberry farmers, which is where they make those varieties of honey. They manage their bees organically, using no synthetics chemicals or antibiotics in their hives. In addition to that, their honey is raw, unfiltered, small-batch, and minimally processed.
Beekeeping is a year-round effort, but honey production only occurs during the warmer months when flowers are blooming, giving the bees access to the nectar and pollen they provide. They harvest honey several times in the summer and fall, which allows them to isolate different honey varieties based on the flowers that are blooming at the time. The South Jersey landscape provides a huge variety, vastly affecting the color, texture, and flavor of the honey! For example, this time of year Japanese Knotweed is in full bloom, and gives the honey a dark, rich, fig jam flavor. Then Goldenrod will bloom, which makes for a very dark and earthy tasting honey. In our area, the earlier season honey tends to be lighter than late season.
Honey is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and is excellent for overall health and well-being.
After the fall honey harvest, Mill Creek Apiary continues to check the bees for proper health and weight as they approach winter to ensure they are disease free, strong enough to survive the winter months and able to flourish in the Spring.
In addition to “regular” tasting honey, they make infused honey and creamed honey which is deliciously smooth and spreadable. They offer their honey at the farmers market, as well as year-round in their shop located at 1 N. Main St. in Medford, NJ where you can stop in to sample them all!
As they say,
